چکیده
Abstract We present a large sample of infrared-luminous candidate active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that lack X-ray detections in Chandra, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR fields. selected all optically detected SDSS sources with redshift measurements, combined additional broadband photometry from WISE, UKIDSS, 2MASS, GALEX, modeled the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) our sources. parameterize nuclear obscuration SEDs uncover thousands powerful obscured AGNs counterparts, many which are identified as AGN candidates based on straightforward WISE photometric criteria. Using observed luminosity correlation between rest-frame 2–10 keV ( ${L}_{{\rm{X}}}$?> ) $6\,\mu {\rm{m}}$?> ${L}_{\mathrm{MIR}}$?> ), we estimate intrinsic luminosities combine these data flux limits catalogs to determine lower obscuration. ratio intrinsic-to-observed ${R}_{{L}_{{\rm{X}}}}$?> find significant fraction column densities approaching ${N}_{{\rm{H}}}\gt {10}^{24}$?> cm –2 , suggesting multiwavelength observations necessary account for population heavily AGNs. simulate underlying ${N}_{{\rm{H}}}$?> distribution non-detected through survival analysis, confirm presence activity via stacking. Our results point considerable extremely undetected by current observatories.

The Toroidal Obscuration of Active Galactic Nuclei
Observations give strong support for the unification scheme of active galactic nuclei. The scheme is premised on toroidal obscuration of the central engine by dusty clouds that are individually very optically thick. These lectures summarize the torus properties, describe the handling and implications of its clumpy nature and present speculations about its dynamic origin.
متن کاملX-ray absorption in Active Galactic Nuclei
We review some of the main physical and statistical properties of the X-ray absorber in AGNs. In particular, we review the distribution of the absorbing column density inferred from X-ray observations of various AGN samples. We discuss the location of the X-ray absorber and the relation with the dust absorption at optical and infrared wavelengths. Finally, we shortly review the recent findings ...
متن کاملHeavy X-ray Absorption in Soft X-ray Weak Active Galactic Nuclei
Recent ROSAT studies have identified a significant population of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) that are notably faint in soft X-rays relative to their optical fluxes. Are these AGN intrinsically X-ray weak or are they just highly absorbed? Brandt, Laor & Wills have systematically examined the optical and UV spectral properties of a well-defined sample of these soft X-ray weak (SXW) AGN drawn fro...
متن کاملThe X-ray Spectral Properties and Variability of Luminous High-redshift Active Galactic Nuclei
We perform a detailed investigation of moderate-to-high quality X-ray spectra of ten of the most luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs) known at z > 4 (up to z ∼ 6.28). This study includes five new XMM-Newton observations and five archived X-ray observations (four by XMM-Newton and one by Chandra). We find that the X-ray power-law photon indices of our sample, composed of eight radio-quiet sour...
متن کاملClumpy winds and the obscuration of Active Galactic Nuclei
The role of star-formation driven outflows in the obscuration of the central source in the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is discussed. The outflow from a sub-parsec scale accretion disc is numerically modelled for parameters appropriate to the Galactic Centre. The resulting obscuration pattern is very patchy, with some lines of sight becoming optically thick to Thomson scattering. A fixed observ...
